<image:title>Blog - Unity is Divisive in the United States - Kansas city chiefs stand in unity against racial injustice</image:title>
<image:caption>Last night during the kickoff of the NFL season, a home-opener for the reigning Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs, saw a display of racial unity met with a bogus, bellicose reaction. Indeed, the fans assembled in Arrowhead stadium would audibly bristle: the sight of players, both Black and white, Chiefs and Texans, their arms locked in a symbolic gesture, would engender a primal disgust. The fans disdain, communicated through sonorous boos, would lay down a disappointing track to the heartwarming visual. Yet here, the audio from this midwestern fanbase would actually prove incongruous, it ultimately discordant with the harmonious scene playing out on the field. In a COVID world, a world slowly coming to grips with the concurrent plague of racial inequality, the world of sports has provided a template for how to best tackle this outstanding problem. We are less than two weeks removed from leaders within the NBA’s bubble—it a microcosm of resilience in more ways than one—putting the playoffs on hold to bring attention to the maiming of Jacob Blake, a black man paralyzed by Kenosha, Wisconsin police. That America’s athletes, like its people, are feeling their way through this new normal, progress invariably replacing stasis, it has in many ways imbued our resilient community with a sense of hope. But because sports is in many ways, the opiate of the masses, it’s important to note that these athletes placing focus on these issues is helping educate a citizenry that has consistently taken its eyes off the ball when it comes to racial parity. Yet, in a time of record human loss, this American malady is proving to be resilient, in some ways, resistant to treatment. As the presidency of Barack Obama and the revanchist impulse to diminish his impact proves: many Americans suffer from a pre-existing condition. The state of Missouri, the epicenter for last nights televised disgrace, finds me disconsolate for a myriad of reasons. Least of which is because my family tree is rooted deeply in its flat plains; my grandmother and extended family still residing in the Show-me-State. Over 150 years removed from the Dred Scott v Sandford Supreme Court ruling, in which it was decided the Missouri Compromise did not extend to the aforementioned and, more specially, that neither he, nor anyone of African ancestry could claim citizenship in the United States, last nights spectacle, those boos merely amplified this ostensible and prevailing determination. Ryan Clark, a former NFL player and ESPN analyst would edify quite poignantly that had the players stood in locked arms to celebrate breast cancer or autism awareness, or veterans, those same fans would have cheered—for he himself having engaged in similar NFL pregame moments, had routinely observed the converse of what the players were met with last night. It suggests that, as I pointed to, the disease of racism, of middle America’s own infirmity, has too often been misdiagnosed. Lest there be any confusion: those fans in attendance at last nights game are undeniably, categorically sick. Having misconstrued racial reconciliation as a problem, diversity as adversity, unity as unsightly, they’ve ultimately validated the severity of the problem and thus, the necessity of our fight. The Show-me-State showed its ass last night, and until we can force this medicine down their benighted gullets, many in our country will likely keep infecting others—passing along this disease to their children. God help us.</image:caption>
